Safety Net – Prevention Project 2023-2026

Safety Net supports the recovery of those affected by rape, sexual and domestic violence, abuse and exploitation across Cumbria. In addition, they aim to prevent abuse through education and training via their work in schools (Prevention Projects).

Safety Net – Prevention Project 2023-2026

Safety Net supports the recovery of those affected by rape, sexual and domestic violence, abuse and exploitation across Cumbria. In addition, they aim to prevent abuse through education and training via their work in schools (Prevention Projects). The Prevention Projects are collaborative and aim to embed whole school and community based approach to working in schools. They focus on preventing harm, early intervention and minimising longer-term impacts.

The grant enables the continuation of the Copeland schools-based Prevention Project for a further three years, covering salary and running costs. The project will provide students and their families access to a range of 1:2:1 therapy and support, drop-in sessions, awareness raising and targeted teacher training covering a wide range of issues including domestic abuse, sexual abuse, online grooming, self-harm.

Project Impacts

  • Reduce risk and risk-taking behaviours: suicide, self-harm, suicide ideation, online safety working closely with the safeguarding leads in schools and children’s services regarding the management of risk.
  • Reduce symptoms of trauma: including depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms.
  • Improve emotional resilience: by improving self-care and coping strategies, strengthening relationships, and encouraging social engagement.
  • Improve safeguarding and risk management and signposting to other relevant services for extra support if needed.
