Whitehaven, Egremont and District Credit Union – ‘Your Money Workshops’

The ‘Your Money Workshops’ project follows a successful pilot scheme. The project aims to increase prosperity by assisting with financial choices via workshops within Copelands communities. The project will address issues as a result of the economic pressures on everyday living and assist customers to be wiser about their financial choices.

Whitehaven, Egremont and District Credit Union has excellent working relationship with organisations within the Copeland community and have a referral service with Home Group, Copeland Citizens Advice Bureau, Howgill Family Centre, Age UK and Copeland Borough Council. The Credit Union also works closely with local schools and community groups, regularly giving assemblies and presentations.

Andrea Dockeray, Project Manager “With the introduction of Universal Credit there has never been a better time to look at your financial situation and budget accordingly”.

Andrea added “The Workshops have encouraged people to become thrifty and are now saving for the first time, the majority of the Workshop attendees become good Credit Union members, and sometimes volunteers”.

Funds for the projects have come from Copeland Community Fund, Phyllis Harney Trust Trust, NMP and Whitehaven, Egremont and District Credit Union.

• 600 Local People Assisted in their Skills Development
• 6 Local People Helped to Secure Employment, Education or Training
• 200 Number of Volunteer hours


Outcomes

1. Raising the financial self-confidence of the community
2. Providing a safe environment for volunteers to develop skills necessary to look for paid employments.
3. Growth of credit union – increase in membership, savings and loan book.
